Do I need planning permission for a granny annexe in Sussex?
Unlike many of our garden rooms, you probably will need to obtain planning permission for to build a granny annexe or garden annex. The key difference between a garden room and an annex is the intended use, as any space intended for living or sleeping purposes requires planning permission.
Don't let this put you off. In most cases, acquiring planning permission is straight forward and easy to obtain, especially if you are otherwise building within the 'usual' permitted development rights e.g. within 3m height limits, behind the house, does not exceed more than 50% of the entire space of your home etc.
